This course builds on ART 147 by advancing students’ skills with oil painting materials and techniques, with continued emphasis on composition, structure, and expressive approaches. Students refine their technical abilities, expand their use of tools and mediums, and strengthen personal artistic direction through focused studio practice and critique.

Prerequisites

ART 147 with a grade of “C” or higher or instructor approval.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Identify essential tube colors, painting supplies, and equipment used in intermediate oil painting. 
2. Mix primary and secondary colors to produce intentional, accurate, and repeatable color results. 
3. Compose and complete an original artwork that demonstrates growth beyond foundational skills learned in ART 147. 
4. Evaluate and correct compositional issues that exceed those introduced at the introductory level. 
5. Apply intermediate color‑theory concepts to strengthen visual balance, contrast, and overall design. 
6. Demonstrate safe, efficient, and appropriate use of paints, mediums, tools, and studio materials throughout the creative process.
