Practice in reading and writing sentences, paragraphs, and short essays with an emphasis on the writing process; includes a review of basic grammar and punctuation rules in the context of writing. Lab time will be used to guide students through the writing process and to focus on individual grammar practice and writing skills.
Prerequisites
Reading proficiency as established by District Policy.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Write simple, compound, and complex sentences.
- Use basic rules of grammar and punctuation.
- Organize and develop effective paragraphs.
- Write two essays using different rhetorical modes (e.g. narrative, exemplification, classification,
- cause/effect, process/analysis, comparison/contrast, etc.) OR one essay with a major revision.
- Write a capstone essay demonstrating the ability to integrate material from an outside source.
- Select from the following: a response essay, using personal experiences and observations to respond to a text OR an argumentative/persuasive essay.
- Develop critical reading skills as they relate to writing.
