Develop skills in reading and composing sentences, paragraphs, and brief essays, with a focus on the stages of the writing process. The course also covers fundamental grammar and punctuation rules as they apply to writing. Lab sessions will support students through each step of the writing process and provide targeted practice in grammar and writing techniques.

Reading proficiency as established by District Policy.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Construct simple, compound, and complex sentence structures.
- Apply fundamental grammar and punctuation conventions accurately.
- Structure and develop coherent and well-organized paragraphs.
- Compose two essays utilizing different rhetorical strategies (such as narrative, exemplification, classification, cause and effect, process analysis, or comparison and contrast) or complete one essay with a substantial revision.
- Produce a final essay that demonstrates the ability to incorporate information from an external source. Choose from the following options: a response essay that draws on personal experiences and reflections in reaction to a text, or a persuasive/argumentative essay.
- Strengthen analytical reading abilities in support of effective writing.
