Emphasizes clear and effective writing and critical reading. Students generate a minimum of 7,000 words through formal and informal writing projects, including revised drafts throughout the semester. Students with borderline placement scores will benefit from taking ENG 110, English Composition I Lab which is designed to accompany ENG 101.
Prerequisites
ENG 100 with a grade of “C” or higher or writing placement as established by District policy and reading proficiency as established by District policy.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate sophisticated support skills as the semester progresses that are necessary to the writing of effective essays.
- Demonstrate increasingly sophisticated critical reading and thinking skills as the semester progresses. Write a minimum of two essays, one from each category below as assigned by the instructor. Each essay will be a minimum of 750 words: Category One: - Personal narrative, observation, recall, or interview. - Response to and interaction with an essay, based on personal experience. Category Two: - A formal proposal. - A rhetorical analysis and evaluation of an essay.
- Refutation of an essay.
- Write a capstone essay of 1000 words, minimum, that identifies a problem on a relevant issue and offers a logical solution, synthesizing materials from a minimum of three sources, and demonstrating mastery of overall course concepts.
