This course enhances students’ understanding and enjoyment of music by exploring a wide range of musical styles, genres, historical periods, world traditions, and fundamental musical elements. Students develop listening skills through attendance at live performances, analysis of concert recordings, and participation in guided discussions that deepen their appreciation of music across cultures and contexts.

Prerequisites

Reading proficiency as established by District Policy.

1.    Describe fundamental musical elements, categorize instrument families, and outline characteristics of the human voice.
2.    Distinguish between music genres and identify their significant historical developments.
3.    Identify major composers and analyze their contributions to the evolution of music.
4.    Develop aural skills to cultivate a deeper appreciation for music.
5.    Compare and contrast music from a variety of cultural traditions.
6.    Analyze the role of music in culture and its significance within the Humanities.
7.    Foster positive attitudes toward supporting music as a cultural aspect of the community and increase appreciation of music and the arts.
