Gila Community College collaborates with fellow accredited institutions of higher education in order to maximize the transfer of student coursework. The following establishes a clear procedure for obtaining transfer credit at Gila Community College.
Procedure
- Students must have each of their former higher education institutions send - by mail or electronically - an official transcript directly to the Gila Community College Administration office. A student may also hand-deliver sealed official transcripts to the Records and Registration office.
- Appropriate Records and Registration office staff will evaluate official student transcripts, determine the applicability of credit earned at other institutions of higher education, and will record accepted transfer credits on the student's transcript.
- Students may receive transfer credit for courses in which they received a grade of “C” or better. Developmental coursework below 100-level may be accepted for the purpose of fulfilling course prerequisites. However, developmental course credit will not apply toward a Gila Community College degree or certificate.
- When the transfer courses are determined to be equivalent or similar to Gila Community College courses, students will receive credit for the equivalent Gila Community College courses. Courses that are determined to not be equivalent or similar to Gila Community College courses will transfer as elective credit.
- Transfer credit from non-accredited post-secondary institutions may also be accepted if such credits represent equivalent or higher-level work at Gila Community College.
Transfer coursework is not calculated in Gila Community College’s student grade point average.
Accredited higher education institutions are those fully accredited through the U.S. Department of Education Accrediting Agencies.
Special Opportunities
Credit for Former or Current Military Members
This opportunity will be provided when Gila Community College establishes veteran serving status through the Arizona Department of Veterans' Services.
Awarding undergraduate credit on the basis of advanced placement, Cambridge International, CLEP, Dantes Subject Standardized Tests, and/or comparable exams:
The College will annually review any new or revised advanced placement, Cambridge International, CLEP, Dantes Subject Standardized Test, or other comparable exam scores to determine the scores necessary for the awarding of undergraduate credit and the number of credits awarded toward degree or certificate completion.
The College will establish the appropriate scores required to receive credit for an exam and the amount of credit awarded.
The College may determine whether to award credits and how credit applies toward fulfilling a major requirement, a general education category requirement, or an elective requirement.
Exam scores for students transferring from an Arizona community college that has adopted the Arizona General Education Curriculum will be awarded in accordance with the College’s published scores required to receive credit, and the type of credit awarded. A completed Arizona General Education Curriculum containing exam credit(s) will be awarded in accordance with the AZTransfer Articulation Taskforce policies and procedures.
