This course explores the origins, evolution, and future of life from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students examine the formation of stars and planets, the emergence and evolution of life on Earth, and the development of complex organisms and human societies. The course also investigates the roles of culture, technology, and artificial intelligence in shaping humanity’s future, as well as the search for life beyond Earth. Designed for non-science majors, the course promotes critical thinking about humanity’s place in the universe and its responsibility for Earth’s future.

1. Describe the physical conditions required for life and explain the roles of stars and planets in creating habitable environments.
2. Explain the major evolutionary transitions that have increased biological complexity over Earth's history.
3. Compare and contrast genetic evolution and cultural evolution and discuss how each has shaped the development of life and human societies.
4. Describe the evolution of human civilization, including the roles of agriculture, technology, science, and industrialization in transforming the planet.
5. Evaluate the potential impacts of artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies on the future of humanity and Earth's ecosystems.
6. Analyze alternative scenarios for Earth's future, including environmental, technological, and societal pathways, using scientific evidence and logical reasoning.
7. Summarize current scientific methods used to search for life elsewhere in the universe and distinguish between the search for simple microbial life and intelligent civilizations.
8. Apply scientific reasoning and evidence to discuss questions concerning the origin, evolution, and future of life in the universe.
