This course explores the foundational concepts and structures that support effective mathematics instruction in grades K–8. Topics include the base-ten number system, operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, as well as problem-solving strategies, ratios, proportions, and key ideas from number theory. Emphasis is placed on developing a deep conceptual understanding to support classroom teaching and student learning.

Prerequisites

MAT 142 or higher with a grade of "C" or higher or math placement as established by District policy.

Student Learning Outcomes

1.    Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of numbers and the structure of the base-ten system.
2.    Analyze and explain the meaning, models, and operations of fractions.
3.    Describe and justify methods for addition and subtraction of whole numbers and decimals.
4.    Explain and apply various models and strategies for understanding multiplication.
5.    Interpret and communicate the conceptual foundations of division, including its relationship to multiplication.
6.    Understand and explain the concepts of ratio and proportion and their applications.
7.    Describe fundamental ideas in number theory, such as factors, multiples, and prime numbers, and their relevance to K–8 instruction.
