This introductory course focuses on the identification, selection, cutting, shaping, and polishing of minerals and gemstones. A materials fee is required.
Prerequisites
ART 178 with a grade of “C” or higher
Student Learning Outcomes
1. Recognize and classify twelve distinct rocks suitable for gemstone use.
2. Operate a 16-inch slab saw and a 10-inch trim saw safely and effectively under instructor guidance.
3. Produce five cabochons that are well-cut, shaped, and polished, exhibiting minimal imperfections such as cracks, scratches, or flat surfaces.
