This course is designed to develop clear, effective academic writing while enhancing students’ critical reading skills. By engaging in formal essays, informal writing, and revision-based assignments, students are guided to construct well-supported arguments, analyze complex texts, and refine their writing processes. The curriculum emphasizes drafting, incorporating feedback from peers and instructors, and continually improving clarity, organization, and style.
Prerequisites
ENG 100 with a grade of “C” or higher or writing placement as established by District policy and reading proficiency as established by District policy.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Exhibit progressively advanced supporting strategies essential for composing well-structured and effective academic essays throughout the duration of the course.
- Demonstrate a continual development of critical reading and analytical thinking abilities as the semester advances.
- Compose a minimum of two essays, each no fewer than 750 words, selected from the following categories as assigned by the instructor:
- Category One: Personal narrative, observational writing, recollection, or interview-based composition; or a reflective response to an essay grounded in personal experience.
- Category Two: A formal proposal; a rhetorical analysis and evaluation of an essay; or a critical refutation of an essay.
- Produce a capstone essay of no fewer than 1,000 words that identifies a significant issue and proposes a reasoned solution. This final composition must synthesize content from at least three external sources and demonstrate comprehensive mastery of the course’s core concepts.
