This course offers a critical study of selected literary works from the Middle Ages through the Restoration and the Eighteenth Century. It introduces students to a broad spectrum of cultural traditions, worldviews, and belief systems as reflected in the literature of these historical periods. Throughout the semester, students are required to produce a minimum of 2,500 words of written analysis, including revised drafts, demonstrating engagement with the texts and the development of interpretive and critical thinking skills.
Prerequisites
ENG 101 with a grade of “C” or higher
1. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the conventions and components that constitute effective essay responses in a literary context.
2. Exhibit the ability to engage in close, analytical reading of literary texts.
3. Display comprehension of the literary contributions and thematic concerns of individual authors from early English literature.
4. Apply interpretive and analytical skills independently, building upon insights developed through class discussions.
5. Demonstrate knowledge of the defining characteristics and literary developments associated with the three major periods studied in the course: the Medieval era, the Renaissance (including both Elizabethan and Jacobean phases), and the Restoration and Eighteenth Century.
6. Articulate meaningful connections and thematic continuities across the three literary periods covered in the course.
