This course introduces students to the principles of storytelling. Through short writing exercises, assignments, and discussions, participants develop skills in narrative construction. Topics include plot, point of view, setting, description, conflict, characterization, dialogue, tension, revision, and submission strategies.

Student Learning Outcomes

1.    Complete targeted exercises and assignments to facilitate the generation of new story ideas.
2.    Analyze key narrative elements, including plot, point of view, setting, and description.
3.    Implement effective strategies for rewriting and revising drafts.
4.    Produce and revise at least one original short story.
5.    Demonstrate control over mechanical and stylistic elements of written language to produce clear and effective prose.
6.    Apply the critical vocabulary of fiction theory to engage in workshop discussions of narrative technique.
7.    Apply the critical vocabulary of fiction theory in written analyses of published short stories.
8.    Compose and revise a cohesive piece of short fiction.
