In this course, students will read and analyze selected works of literature from Native American beginnings to the Civil War so as to gain insights into the history and progress of American literature and the history of the Americas as viewed through literature. Students will generate a minimum of 2,500 words through formal and informal writing assignments and revisions.

Prerequisites

ENG 101 with a grade of “C” or higher

Student Learning Outcomes
    1. Demonstrate the ability to read works of literature critically, taking into account social, political, historical, and intellectual contexts as well as specific literary structures, elements, and qualities.
    2. Write a formal literary analysis (essay) based on an analytical/argumentative thesis and supported by evidence from primary and secondary texts.
