This course provides supervised field experience in the education, guidance, and care of young children (birth through Third Grade). Practical application in a childcare center comprises the lab portion of the course. The class will meet monthly to discuss developmentally appropriate curriculum, guidance techniques, and age-appropriate activities that can be used during their practicum placement. Prerequisites: Students must complete a first aid certification and provide documented proof of fingerprint clearance prior to center placement.
Prerequisites
A grade of “C” or higher in one of the following courses: ECE 100, ECE 102, ECE 105, ECE 110, or ECE 120 or instructor approval.
1. Demonstrate Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) and general practices.
2. Compare theories of child development, children’s acquisition of fundamental knowledge and learning to teaching practices.
3. Develop classroom management strategies that utilize developmentally appropriate practices to meet the needs of all children.
4. Plan a written daily schedule providing a balance of activities throughout the day.
5. Communicate regularly with cooperating teacher to clearly define roles and set expectations in practicum placement.
6. Demonstrate and apply effective teaching strategies for self-regulation skills and guidance with young children.
7. Demonstrate professionalism through dependability and teamwork in the educational setting.
8. Develop and complete a critical analysis for improvement based on constructive criticism and self-evaluation.
9. Create lesson plans and implement developmentally effective learning experiences aligned with Arizona Early Learning Standards.
10. Design and implement emergent and inclusive curriculum and lessons for all children in the classroom.
