This course examines major social problems in contemporary American society, including crime, delinquency, substance abuse, inequality, aging, population issues, and environmental concerns. These topics are explored within historical and global contexts to deepen understanding of their causes and consequences.

Prerequisites

Reading proficiency as established by District Policy. 

Student Learning Outcomes

1.    Describe prevalent social problems, identify the factors that contribute to their classification as problems, and assess the role of personal responsibility within society.
2.    Analyze how economic, political, and power disparities affect racial, ethnic, and gender groups within individual societies and in a global context.
3.    Assess the current state of crime and violence in the United States by evaluating its prevalence, the involvement of various demographic groups, and the effectiveness of implemented interventions.
4.    Explain the relationship between racial and ethnic group inequality and broader societal challenges, highlighting their interconnectedness.
5.    Describe the challenges that emerge from the interaction between population dynamics and environmental concerns.
6.    Analyze the challenges and consequences that result from conflict and war.
