This course will enhance students' understanding of interpersonal communication and help improve their ability to communicate effectively in diverse situations. Topics will include foundational elements of communication, perceptions, self-concepts, verbal and nonverbal behaviors, active listening, conflict resolution, feedback, and developing and maintaining personal and professional relationships. 

Prerequisites

Reading proficiency as established by District Policy.

  1. Identify and articulate the fundamental characteristics of interpersonal communication.
  2. Analyze the effectiveness and appropriateness of various verbal and nonverbal messages.
  3. Identify barriers to effective listening and demonstrate appropriate listening behaviors and responses.
  4. Explain the interaction between verbal and nonverbal messages.
  5. Describe and differentiate active listening from passive listening.
  6. Explain the importance of feedback in interpersonal communication.
  7. Demonstrate effective communication strategies that contribute to the establishment of positive communication climates.
  8. Explain how different conflict management styles can influence interpersonal relationships.
  9. Outline implications of an individual's cultural and social background on interpersonal dynamics.
  10. Describe the processes involved in self-concept formation and identity management, along with their effects on interpersonal interactions.
