This introductory hairstyling course provides students with foundational knowledge and skills required for professional practice and regulatory compliance in Arizona. This course will cover industry history and evolution, career paths for hairstylists, professional image development, life skills, professional communication, safety and infection control, professional ethics, nutrition and health, ergonomics, anatomy and physiology and principles of hair design.

Prerequisites

Acceptance into Gila Community College’s Cosmetology Hairstyling Program. 

Reading proficiency as established by District policy.

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify and explain the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology’s rules and regulations, including licensing requirements, professional standards, and legal responsibilities applicable to cosmetology practice.
  2. Outline how the beauty industry has evolved throughout the ages from simple grooming techniques to modern advances that define hairstyling in the twenty-first century.
  3. List career opportunities for licensed hairstylist.
  4. Explain life skills and list the principles that contribute to success.
  5. Employ tools such as goal setting, time management, and study strategies.
  6. Demonstrate a professional image and attitude.
  7. Explain and employ principles of infection control.
  8. Describe Federal and State regulatory agencies that oversee salons and hairstyling services.
  9. Explain communicating for success in the context of hairstyling.
  10. Define nutritional needs, proper hydration and immunity.
  11. Identify common health considerations in the beauty industry.
  12. Explain and implement proper ergonomics.
  13. Describe the structure and division of cells.
  14. List and describe tissues in the body.
  15. Explain the basic functions of organs and body systems.
  16. Identify the elements of hair design and the principles of hair design.
  17. Explain the influence of hair texture on design.
  18. Recognize different facial shapes and outline beneficial hairstyles for each.
  19. Distinguish how profiles, proportions, sideburns, and glasses contribute to hairstyle design.
