In this course, students will learn skin structure and growth, skin disorders and diseases common in the salon, chemistry and chemical safety, Electricity and electrical safety, chemical texture services, hairstyling, and braiding and braid extensions.
Prerequisites
COS 132 with a grade of “C” or higher.

- List and describe layers and functions of the skin, including the three major layers, nerves, melanin, collagen, elastin, and glands as they pertain to cosmetology.
- Outline and explain common skin lesions, sebaceous and sudoriferous gland disorders, skin inflammations, skin hypertrophies and skin pigment changes.
- List contributing factors to skin aging.
- Identify the effects of sun exposure on the skin, including forms of skin cancer.
- Explain chemistry, basic chemical structure, and chemical safety.
- Identify the differences between solutions, suspensions and emulsions.
- Describe potential hydrogen and how the pH scale works.
- Summarize neutralization and redox reactions.
- Interpret safety data sheets.
- Explain electrical theory and safety.
- Identify electrotherapy modalities.
- Discuss light energy and phototherapy as it is used in cosmetology.
- Describe different chemicals used for relaxing and permanently waving hair.
- Describe tools and supplies used for relaxing hair and perming hair.
- List and describe permanent waving tools and designs.
- Outline safety guidelines and precautions for chemical texture services.
- Safely perform chemical texture services.
- Describe professional tools and products and demonstrate their use.
- Detail and perform hairstyling procedures including natural textured styles, curl formation, blow drying, updo techniques, and wet-sets.
