AJS 117: Law Enforcement Training Academy I

An orientation and introduction of law enforcement as well as an overview of law and legal matters, patrol procedures, and traffic control. Students must be sponsored by an approved law enforcement agency or admitted through the application process in accordance with all current Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZ POST) guidelines. Students must complete AJS 117 and AJS 217 as part of the Law Enforcement Training Academy Certificate and complete a minimum of 663 hours of training. Students must have a high school diploma or GED, be at least 21 years of age upon completion of the Academy, have no felony convictions, be a U.S. citizen, possess a valid driver’s license, pass a physical requirement test, a written evaluation, an oral board review, a background investigation, a medical evaluation, and a polygraph exam. Students may not have a history of AZ POST or agency disqualifiers and must meet any additional requirements per AZ POST. Course fees may be required.

Admission to Gila Community College’s Law Enforcement Training Academy.

  17. Identify alcohol intoxication as well as alcohol intoxication-like symptoms.
  18. Describe the proper attitude and techniques essential in dealing effectively with traffic violators.
  19. Identify what constitutes a reportable traffic collision and the proper procedures for traffic collision investigations.
  20. Define the most frequently used sections of Title 28 of the Arizona Revised Statutes as used by police officers.
  21. Examine the proper techniques for giving effective testimony.
  22. Review common civil and criminal liability facing law enforcement agencies and officers.
  23. Explain the fundamental techniques for controlling hostile and non-hostile crowds and identify proper methods and safeguards for employing chemical agents and decontamination methods.
  24. Review the mechanical and safety features of a service handgun and the proper methods for servicing and firing a police handgun and shotgun.
  25. Demonstrate the proper mental and physical conditioning needed to maintain proper health as a police officer.
  26. Write a variety of professional police reports.
