This course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to respond to medical emergencies safely, promptly, and effectively. It is designed for individuals with little or no medical training and is not designed for health care providers. The course covers essential first aid procedures, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for adults, children, and infants along with proper use of the automated external defibrillator (AED). Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be prepared to act confidently in emergency situations at home, work, or in the community. Successful completion of the course will enable the student to receive a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) with AED and CPR card from the American Heart Association (AHA).

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Identify signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies.
  2. Demonstrate basic first aid techniques for a variety of injuries and conditions.
  3. Recognize and respond appropriately to environmental emergencies (e.g., heatstroke, hypothermia, bees/stings).
  4. Apply strategies to prevent illness and injury in a variety of settings.
  5. Perform adult, child, and infant CPR and demonstrate proper use of an Automated External Defibrillor (AED).
  6. Manage foreign-body airway obstruction in adults, children, and infants using appropriate techniques.
  7. Recognize and respond to opioid-associated life-threatening emergencies, including the use of naloxone.
  8. Demonstrate effective communication and decision-making during an emergency situation.
