This introductory course provides a comprehensive overview of fire protection and emergency services, designed for students pursuing careers in the fire service or related emergency response fields. The curriculum aligns with the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) model and meets foundational standards outlined in NFPA 1001, with content supporting certification pathways recognized by IFSAC and the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence (AzCFSE).


Students will explore the history, culture, and organizational structure of fire and emergency services, including public and private sector roles. The course covers fire loss analysis, fire department functions within local government, laws and regulations affecting the fire service, and fire service nomenclature. Additional topics include basic fire chemistry and physics, fire protection systems, fire strategy and tactics, and life safety initiatives.
