This course introduces students to the foundational principles and practices of fire prevention, emphasizing the critical role of prevention in reducing life and property loss. Topics include the history and philosophy of fire prevention, the structure and function of fire prevention bureaus, code enforcement, fire inspections, plans review, fire and life safety education, and fire investigation. Students will explore applicable laws, codes, ordinances, and standards, and gain insight into the responsibilities and qualifications of fire prevention professionals.


The curriculum is aligned with the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) model and supports certification pathways recognized by IFSAC and the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence.

1.    Describe the history, philosophy, and national significance of fire prevention. 
2.    Explain the role and structure of fire prevention bureaus and related organizations. 
3.    Identify and interpret fire codes, laws, ordinances, and standards, and understand their enforcement. 
4.    Conduct basic fire inspections and plan reviews using accepted procedures and documentation practices. 
5.    Recognize common fire hazards and apply basic engineering controls for fire protection. 
6.    Describe the principles and practices of fire and life safety education. 
7.    Explain the process and importance of fire investigation, including collaboration with law enforcement. 
8.    Identify professional qualifications and development pathways for fire marshals, inspectors, educators, and investigators. 
9.    Analyze building construction types, occupancy classifications, and fire protection systems. 
10.    Evaluate hazardous materials and flammable liquid regulations related to fire prevention.
