Course Description 
This course applies the Nurse of the Future competencies and emphasizes the development of clinical judgment to the practice and management of nursing care for child and family units, newborns, and childbearing patients requiring care throughout the wellness-illness continuum. Emphasis is placed on delivering comprehensive, holistic nursing care that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of these patient populations. 


Course Requirements:

1.    Clinical hours are mandatory.
2.    Students must keep clinical requirements such as background checks, certifications, immunizations/exemptions, current throughout the program. A list of requirements can be found in the Nursing Student Handbook.
3.    Students enrolled in the course must also register for the associated NUR 230L course.

Prerequisites

NUR 120 with a grade of “B” or higher, and HCE 240 with grade of “C” or higher.

Corequisites

HCE 241, ENG 102.

Student Learning Outcomes

4.    Team and Collaboration: The student will solicit input from other team members to improve individual and team performance and practice strategies, including patience, prudence, kindness, respect, and tact to encourage civility and effective teamwork.
5.    Safety: The student will utilize safety protocols in maternal, newborn, pediatric, and adult nursing care, demonstrate the ability to identify potential hazards, implement preventative measures, and respond effectively to safety concerns to ensure a safe clinical environment for patients, families, and healthcare team members.
6.    Quality Improvement: The student will apply quality improvement principles to assess and enhance maternal, newborn, pediatric, and adult nursing care practices in a clinical setting, demonstrating the ability to identify areas for improvement.
7.    Evidence-Based Practice: The student will utilize evidence-based practice guidelines to plan and deliver maternal, newborn, pediatric, and adult nursing care, demonstrate the ability to integrate the latest research findings into clinical decision-making, modify care based on best practices, and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to improve patient outcomes.
8.    Informatics: The student will apply health informatics tools to manage and analyze maternal, newborn, pediatric, and adult health data and demonstrate the ability to use and navigate the electronic health records systems to retrieve relevant data for decision-making and communicate findings effectively to enhance patient care and coordination.
