A continuation of AJS 117. This course is designed to go into further detail regarding law, legal matters, patrolling procedures as well as traffic control. AJS 217 is the final course for the Law Enforcement Training Academy certificate. Course fees may be required.

Prerequisites

AJS 117 with a grade of “C” or higher

Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Outline the common principles of preliminary investigations, interviews, and crime scene management.
  2. Discuss the benefits and methods of developing positive police-community relations.
  3. Write a variety of professional police reports.
  4. Demonstrate the proper methods for providing emergency medical care to the victims of accidents or illness.
  5. Explain the special considerations for investigating the more common sex crimes, including interviewing victims and securing evidence.
  6. Explain organized criminal activity, control of government, and gangs in Arizona.
  7. Identify specialized techniques to be used in the investigation of assault, burglary, robbery, auto theft, child abuse, missing persons, and other criminal offenses.
  8. Identify procedures, techniques, and hazards associated with investigating narcotics and dangerous drug violations.
  9. Discuss the benefits and methods of developing positive police/community relations, with emphasis on recognizing cultural differences within the community and the role of the individual officer in developing positive police/community relations.
  10. Describes the legal and moral obligations of law enforcement officers relative to victims.
  11. Discuss language and non-language factors which contribute to effective and ineffective interpersonal communications.
  12. Identify procedures to follow in the event of local and area-wide disasters including bombs.
  13. Use police communication tools appropriately.
  14. Outline an officer’s responsibilities at the scene of various types of fire.
  15. Identify techniques and procedures for directing and controlling traffic.
  16. Outline techniques and procedures for handling civil disputes.
  17. Review the mechanical and safety features of a service handgun and the proper methods for servicing and firing a police handgun and shotgun.
  18. Demonstrate the proper mental and physical conditioning needed to maintain proper health as a police officer.
  19. Demonstrate the various techniques and defensive tactics for maintaining physical control of disruptive, combative, or potentially dangerous subjects.
  20. Discuss basic defensive driving techniques, hazardous road conditions, vehicle pursuits, and high- speed response procedures.
  21. Describe proper procedures for interacting with individuals with mental illness and behavioral health issues.
