Cosmetology II builds on the foundations learned in Cosmetology I.  Part-time students in this class will begin practicing services on clients in the student salon while continuing to learn new practical skills. Theory topics will include trichology and skin science, as well as hair color chemistry, formulation and application techniques.

Prerequisites

COS 101 with a grade of “C” or higher.

  1. Explain and employ principles of infection control.
  2. Conduct a successful client consultation.
  3. Detail and perform hairstyling procedures including natural textured styles, curl formation, blow drying, updo techniques, and wet-sets.
  4. Explain and perform general haircutting techniques.
  5. Identify the most common hair and scalp disorders.
  6. Explain the causes of the most common types of hair loss.
  7. List and describe layers and functions of the skin, including the three major layers, nerves, melanin, collagen, elastin, and glands as they pertain to cosmetology.
  8. Outline and explain common skin lesions, sebaceous and sudoriferous gland disorders, skin inflammations, skin hypertrophies and skin pigment changes.
  9. List contributing factors to skin aging.
  10. Identify the effects of sun exposure on the skin, including forms of skin cancer
  11. Identify excessive hair growth causes.
  12. State and explain temporary and permanent hair removal methods.
  13. Identify hair removal contraindications.
  14. Implement basic makeup techniques used to complement facial shapes and features, including use of color theory.
  15. Describe the uses of various cosmetics and implements for application.
  16. Describe several methods of eyelash enhancement.
  17. Identify and explain equipment, modalities and products used in facial services.
  18. Recognize skin types and contraindications to facial treatments.
  19. Explain how hair’s structure, texture, density and porosity affect hair color.
  20. Define the role of levels and tones in formulating hair color.
  21. Explain color theory and its contribution to tone and intensity in hair.
  22. Compare and describe different categories of hair color including lightener.
  23. Outline and implement the steps for various hair color applications.
  24. Detail and discuss hair color challenges and solutions.
  25. Describe safety precautions to follow during the haircoloring process.
