This course introduces students to the fundamentals of shaft alignment for rotating machinery. Proper alignment reduces vibration, minimizes wear, and extends equipment life. Students will develop hands-on skills in basic alignment methods including Straight Edge/Feeler Gauges, Rim and Face Dial Indicator Method, Reverse Dial Indicator Method, and Laser Shaft Alignment devices.
Prerequisites
TEC 142 Precision Measurement with a grade of “C” or better.
1. Explain the importance of shaft alignment for machinery performance and reliability.
2. Identify common types of misalignments and their causes.
3. Use straightedges, feeler gauges, and dial indicators for basic alignment tasks.
4. Perform soft-foot checks and corrections.
5. Document alignment results in accordance with industry practices.
6. Perform precision shaft alignment using dial indicators and laser alignment systems.
7. Compensate for thermal growth and other environmental factors.
