This first year certificate provides students with foundational skills in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration. Students learn basic refrigeration theory, electrical principles, system components, airflow, and introductory diagnostics through hands on lab experience. The program prepares students for entry level positions as HVAC R helpers or maintenance assistants and provides the core competencies needed to continue into advanced HVAC R training or the AAS degree.


Program Learning Outcomes
1.    Identify workplace hazards and apply OSHA- and industry-approved safety procedures during HVAC R installation, service, and maintenance tasks.
2.    Describe the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer concepts, and the function of major system components.
3.    Interpret basic electrical diagrams, measure electrical values, and apply electrical principles relevant to HVAC R systems.
4.    Recognize and explain the purpose, operation, and basic troubleshooting needs of residential and light commercial HVAC R components.
5.    Use appropriate tools and measurement instruments to perform introductory system checks, identify common issues, and evaluate basic system performance.
6.    Demonstrate proper recovery, charging, and handling techniques in accordance with EPA Section 608 guidelines.

 In order to obtain this certificate, you must: 

  • Complete each required course above with a grade of “C” or better. 
  • File a petition for the certificate. 
  • Remove any indebtedness to the college. 
  • Complete at least 50% of the credits at Gila Community College.

Any developmental courses (such as ENG 100 and MAT 121) must be taken in addition to the above during this semester as prerequisites for later courses.

The foregoing is a recommended, or suggested, sequence of courses. If a student enters the program in the Spring, or transfers credit in, the above would have to be modified.
