This program provides students an opportunity to apply Hairstylist practices and principles in a simulated salon environment. Students perform shampoos, cuts, and styles of men and women to prepare for licensure as professional hairstylists. Students receive instruction in hair design theory and concepts, hair coloring, chemical applications and permanent reconstructions. Students learn customer service, shop management, equipment operation, health and safety, and applicable laws and regulations. Upon successful completion of the 1000-hour program, students will be eligible to take the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology Examination.
After completing the program, students may consider their options to continue their education by enrolling in the Cosmetology or Cosmetology/Nail Technician programs.
In addition to general tuition, a required course fee will be applied per credit hour for all Cosmetology Hairstylist courses enrolled and depending on the Academy being attended course fees may vary.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Implement the basic science of bacteriology, sanitation, and sterilization for client protection related to hairstylist and demonstrate it daily using all safety precautions.
- Communicate in a responsive manner to establish rapport and trust with clients, coworkers, and business leaders.
- Through consultation, educate clients, define design considerations, and identify appropriate products and resources required to produce the intended outcomes.
- Detail and perform hairstyling procedures including natural texture styles, curl formation, blow drying, updo techniques and wet-sets.
- Complete a portfolio containing a résumé and assignments demonstrating the skill level of an existing student.
- Identify and explain the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology’s rules and regulations, including licensing requirements, professional standards, and legal responsibilities applicable to hairstyling practice and salon operation.
- Acquire basic skills needed to pass Arizona State Board of Cosmetology.
Curriculum Requirements
In order to obtain this certificate, you must:
- Complete each required course above with a grade of “C” or better.
- File a petition for the certificate.
- Remove any indebtedness to the college.
- Complete at least 50% of the credits at Gila Community College.
